Yet the conception that there is only one—originally Greek—type of technics has been an obstacle to any original critical thinking of technology in modern Chinese thought. The purpose of questioning technology is therefore to break the chains of technology and be free, not in the absence of technology but through a better understanding of its essence and meaning. Anyhow, if you're looking for extra reading, there's a complementary work Heidegger wrote called The History of Metaphysics. The whole complex of these contrivances is technology. Standing-Reserve Standing-reserve is Heidegger's terms for what comes to stand forth in the setting-upon that is challenging.
But man is not mere standing-reserve 18. Heidegger is concerned with questioning the essence of technology and in particular, modern technology, which he understands as something different to older, pre-industrialised forms of technology. This then creates an illusion that modern technology is applied physical science, rather than being Enframed as such. Thus, the coming to presence of technologyalways threatens man to a revealing the is consumed with ordering, wherein all things present themselves as standing reserve 33. This regulating itself is, for its part, everywhere secured. It too is a revealing.
Heidegger's roots lie deep in the Western philosophical tradition, yet his thought is unique in its language, and its expression. Yet that expediting is always itself directed from the beginning toward furthering something else, i. Everything depends on our manipulating technology in the proper manner as a means. The essays in this volume--intriguing, challenging, and often baffling to the reader--call him always to abandon all superficial scanning and to enter wholeheartedly into the serious pursuit of thinking. If we give heed to this, then another whole realm for the essence of technology will open itself up to us. The telos is responsible for what as matter and for what as aspect are together co-responsible for the sacrificial vessel. The gathering concentrates man upon ordering the real as standing-reserve 19.
The instrumental definition of technology is indeed so uncannily correct that it even holds for modern technology, of which, in other respects, we maintain with some justification that it is, in contrast to the older handwork technology, something completely different and therefore new. . We wonder whose agenda is being followed. But certainly only if reflection upon art, for its part, does not shut its eyes to the constellation of truth, concerning which we are questioning. The other says: Technology is a human activity. In either case we bar to ourselves the way to the primal meaning of that which is later called causality. The revealing reveals to itself its own manifoldly interlocking paths, through regulating their course.
Just one slight nuance I want to bring out. I will wait for your response. Technology comes to presence in the realm where revealing and unconcealment take place, where al étheia, truth, happens. Why did art bear the modest name techne? Likewise, the essence of technology is by no means anything technological. But the revealing never simply comes to an end. To further elaborate on this, Heidegger returns to his discussion of essence.
Heidegger believes that there were two major epochs that preceded the one we have today. Human achievement alone can never banish it. Can you simplify the connection of Heidegger's project, which is the recovery of being that is put into oblivion, and his idea of technology. Heidegger could obfuscate his points, but if Being is indeed culture, I think even Heidegger might have plainly said so. This essay of Heidegger's was mandatory reading for a number of classes i took in Critical theory and philosophy; etc. In this world, humans too, have become resources, slaves to a process that constructs an appearance of truth rather than a revelation of the real.
Technology is a way of revealing. Heidegger's writing style demands a slow, extremely careful reading, and even after going over a page a few times, your never sure if you've really gotten it. But the un concealment itself, within which ordering unfolds, is never a human handiwork, any more than is the realm throughwhich man is already passing every time he as a subject relates to an object. Enframing means that way of revealing that holds sway in the essence of modern technology and that it is itself not technological. Technology itself is a contrivance—in Latin, an instrumentum. The work of the peasant does not challenge the soil of the field. We were huddled together in coats fighting the elements and common sense to have just one more cigarette.
I didn't particularly want to, but my zippo went out after the first one of the… I have usually accepted new technology with open arms, however, as I get older I realize its damaging effects. Modern physics… is challenged forth by the rule of enframing, which demands that nature be orderable as standing-reserve. In other words, it is finding truth. Meanwhile man, precisely as the one so threatened, exalts himself to the posture of lord of the earth. It is true that technology deals with the real and has concerned itself with functioning in relation to the real —although, only by dismantling it, subverting it, perverting the real, reassigning it to an exploitable position in contemporary illusion— but it never actually reveals reality.
